What can you expect before an MRI test?

There is very little preparation for the MRI test. Take your daily medication as usual, unless you rely on it. MRI has several nutritional limitations. You will be informed of the requirements for these exams.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before your exam and check in with the receptionist. You will need to complete the MRI screening form.

You can be asked to switch to a hospital dress. In this case, a locker will be delivered to secure yours.

The technician will check your identification and requested tests. Screening forms will be checked by a technician in consultation with the radiologist if specified. Once MRI contrast is displayed on the exam, a catheter is inserted into the vein of the arm by the nurse.

 

What can I expect during an MRI scan?

·         The duration of the procedure varies, but mostly from 45 minutes to an hour per body part.

·         You still need to lie during the exam. Depending on your body part, you may be asked to hold your breath for up to 30 seconds.

·         The magnets are open forever at both ends. It is well lit and has a fan for patient comfort. There is also a two-way system for communication between patients and technicians. The scanned body part is placed in the center of the magnet.

         During actual imaging, you will hear loud, temporary bright noise. Get earplugs and headphones to minimize noise during the procedure.

·         The technician passes the alarm button to make the technician aware of any complaints they can experience at any time during the MRI test.

·         Some MRI tests require intravenous MRI contrast injections. If you experience discomfort during the injection, find a technician.

 

 

After to MRI scans, what can you expect?

         Contrast injections allow the catheter to be removed intravenously before returning home.

         Allergic reactions from MRI contrast are extremely rare. However, if you have symptoms such as rash, hives, or shortness of breath, you should notify your technician.

         If you experience these symptoms after leaving the facility, you should call your doctor or go to the nearest hospital.
